Extensions can look amazing for months if they're looked after properly, so here are the habits that make the biggest difference between appointments.
Brushing is the big one. Always start from the ends and work your way up, using a loop brush or extension-friendly brush, and try to do this at least once or twice a day, even on days you don't wash your hair. This stops any tangling from building up around the bonds or wefts, which is where most damage happens if it's left too long.
When it comes to washing, let the water run through your hair rather than piling it on top of your head, and be gentle around the root area where the extensions are attached. A sulphate-free shampoo is just as important here as it is for coloured hair, and a lightweight conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends (avoiding the very top of the bonds) keeps everything soft without loosening the attachment points.
At night, a loose braid or low ponytail stops extensions matting while you sleep, and a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction too, if you want to take it a step further.
Finally, try to avoid oil-based products too close to the roots, since these can cause bonds to slip earlier than they should. A little product on the mid-lengths and ends is fine and actually helps keep things looking glossy.
If anything ever feels loose or uncomfortable between appointments, don't wait it out — just get in touch and I'll take a look. ← Back to the blog
